What does it take to coerce 9,000 Wellingtonians out of their beds on a lazy Sunday morning? The answer is the Pelorous Trust Wellington Round the Bays fun walk and run.
It certainly helps when the weather is perfect and the 7km course around the bays is so beautiful, starting at Frank Kitts Park before heading along Oriental Parade and finishing at Kilbirnie Park. With free transport back to the start, competitors enjoyed plenty of entertainment, live bands, street performers and children's entertainment.
The addition of the New Balance Half Marathon marked the 10th Anniversary of the Wellington Round the Bays attracting approximately 900 entrants. The Team Relay event as always attracted a strong corporate element and certainly added to the quintessential Wellington flavour.
The participation of 65 disabled athletes with their 350 caregivers and helpers is further testament to the inclusive, family atmosphere of the event.
"This is a major event on the Wellington calendar, with a large and diverse range of competitors and categories, so we have to be completely organized and confident that everything goes smoothly" asserts Quentin Parr, General Manager from Sport Wellington.
"The IPICO electronic timing system works seamlessly in this type of event," says Gavin Chaplow, Event Manager for Times-7 Sport. "It only takes a few minutes to set each system up and then link them together to deliver instant results."
"We engaged the timing services of Times-7 Sport, as we were impressed with their reputation for delivering prompt and accurate times at major sporting events. Their expertise and commitment was amazing, and they certainly delivered the professional service that they promised" concludes Mr Parr.
