The Press Thule Charity Classic is a 75km circuit road cycle ride. The event starts and finishes at Cust Domain, a large reserve in the township of Cust. It passes through some scenic Canterbury countryside, taking in rolling hills and breathtaking views.
"The locals really support this event, with an impressive 500 competitors enjoying the day" says Lorraine Proffit, Manager and Event Coordinator from Canterbury Charity Trust Hospital. "There's a good mix of about fifty extremely competitive cyclists, with the rest simply out to enjoy a well-organised event and an extremely picturesque ride".
The Canterbury Charity Hospital Trust is a registered charitable trust formed to provide free, elective day surgery and medical consultations to many who cannot otherwise access medical treatment.
This year, Cycling Canterbury assisted with the road management and operated the WheelTime Electronic Timing system to time the event
"It's a brilliant arrangement, and we both win" comments Lorraine Proffit.
Cycling Canterbury purchased their WheelTime Electronic Timing system in 2009 and has successfully timed numerous events including their own Club rides and the 2009 Tour of Canterbury.
"We identified an opportunity to support this wonderful hospital" says Symon Mitchell from Cycling Canterbury.
Canterbury Charity Trust Hospital purchased their own customised WheelTags which they will continue to use to time future events.
"Cycling Canterbury can also rent the Charity Classic WheelTags for events that we time" explains Symon Mitchell. "That way, they get an ongoing income stream and our Club can also earn small revenue which we have committed to Junior Development".
"We're delighted to see this collaborative approach work for the mutual benefit of both parties" says Michael Lynch, General Manager of Times-7 Sport. "Cycling Canterbury has embraced the business model of purchasing a WheelTime system for Club use and then creating strategies to leverage the Club's income"
This year the Charity Classic raised an impressive $26,000.00 - a successful result that really speaks for itself.
