The Orion timing system was used for the first occasion in Sydney to time the UCI Para Cycling World Cup held from 4-6 May 2011. Two of the days were held at Eastern Creek Raceway where the Road Races provided some great action and Sydney Olympic Park was the venue for the final day of competition with Individual Time Trials being showcased to the world.
Cycling Australia hosted the event and athletes and officials travelled from all over the world to do battle. The 2011 UCI Para-cycling Road World Cup is a three round series, after Sydney it heads to Spain (Segovia 10 to 12 June) and then concludes in Canada (Baie-Comeau 8 to 10 July).
The World Cup is a qualifying series for the 2011 UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships being staged in Denmark from 8 to 11 September.
The bikes used in the World Cup vary greatly by category, which is why the Orion Timing system was chosen for this event. The active transponders, coupled together with the simple wire loop finish line, enables all riders times to be captured efficiently. The Finish Lynx camera was also deployed to ensure absolute accuracy and back-up.
The USA with eight gold, two silver and five bronze topped the medal table followed by Great Britain with six gold, three silver and one bronze medal. Italy's medal tally of 21 podium placings was made up of five gold, ten silver and five bronze for a total of 21 medals. Australia added six more medals including two gold on the final day of racing at the 2011 UCI Para-cycling Road World Cup at Sydney Olympic Park. The result put the team fourth on the medal table with a total of five gold, six silver and five bronze medals from the 37 medal events contested.
