Calisto is simply a system of timing by virtual lines. These virtual lines can be the start and finish lines of a race course along with course turning points and boundaries. It is also a recorder of position, speed and pace. It is accurate to ±0.4 m with transmissions every 1 second.
Virtual lines are defined by GPS coordinates which are programmed into the Tracker along with the hours of operation. As each competitor carrying a Tracker crosses the virtual line the Tracker sends its position via a modem to a Receive Station with a range of 15 km. A number of Receive Stations can be positioned along the course to ensure appropriate coverage.
These Receive Stations then communicate via GPRS or Iridium satellite to a PC running the Calisto software which in turn is connected to the Internet. This software displays and manages the progression and results of the race in real time.
