WheelTime was the timing system of choice for both the Australian and New Zealand National Road Cycling Championships held in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia and Te Awamutu, New Zealand respectively in the second week of January. Rumours abound in both countries that the clash of dates was a deliberate ploy to prevent any chance of a cyclist claiming the crown off their neighbour.
Cycling Australia rolled out their own WheelTime system to time the time trials and road races using Sportscore to manage the event and produce instant reports for the Open and U23 categories in both mens and womens. Ron Bonham, National Technical Director said "WheelTime is living up to its promises of simplicity, accuracy and reliability. I cannot believe we survived so long without it."
Ron Bonham was also thrilled with the latest WheelTime innovation. "Half way around the course we set up a second WheelTime system using only the side mounted antenna. As each cyclist passed their time was beamed back to the commentators at the finish area generating a huge amount of information and excitement for the 20,000 spectators."
"We have been testing the side mounted system for a number of months now with extremely positive results," says Michael Lynch, General Manager, Times-7 Sport. "This system is perfect for capturing split times, and is ideal for cycling and mountain biking clubs."
Whilst the Australians reveled in their success, BikeNZ was also enjoying the peace of mind provided by Times-7 Sport. "Delivering results is what racing is all about and electronic timing takes all the pressure off the organizers" said Don Buchanan, Race Manager. "We can rely one hundred percent on the accuracy of the results."
"The Elite and U23 Road National Championships is the showcase event for New Zealand's top talent," says Don Buchanan. "These athletes expect their times to be recorded accurately, professionally and promptly. We can rely on Times-7 Sport to deliver on this promise."
"The fierce competitive spirit of these elite athletes is testament that cycling in Australasia is thriving," says Michael Lynch. "Times-7 Sport is proud that the national cycling bodies in both countries have selected WheelTime to reward these athletes with the very best timing technology available."
