Star and Garter Wheelers Cycling Club hosted the 2009 RaboPlus Club Road National Cycling Championships from 21 - 24 October. One of their key responsibilities was the timing of the event.
In stepped the organizational skills of Road and Track Relationship Manager Rachael Neutze from BikeNZ who facilitated a collaborative solution between Star and Garter Wheelers, Times-7 Sport, Cycling Canterbury and BikeNZ.
Cycling Canterbury generously contributed to the solution by offering their WheelTime system for the official timing. They purchased WheelTime last year and have successfully timed numerous club and professional events including the 2009 Tour of Canterbury.
"We were happy to assist by lending Star and Garter our WheelTime system as we recognize that this co-operative environment benefits the sport of cycling and we all benefit in the long term" says Derrick Nelson from Cycling Canterbury.
John McBain from Pegasus Cycling Club capably operated the WheelTime system and "did a sterling job to pull it all together at the event!" comments Malcolm Saunders, President of Star and Garter Wheelers.
Times-7 Sport supported the initiative by supplying the WheelTags. "We're delighted to support this kind of interactive solution" says Michael Lynch, General Manager of Times-7 Sport. "It demonstrates the commitment of all parties to develop and grow a robust and independent cycling community, and the WheelTime system is the key link between cycling groups and events. We're certainly committed to working proactively with all parties to achieve this goal."
"This is exactly the kind of collective approach that supports our vision of a nationwide standard of data capture" adds Kieran Turner, Chief Executive of Bike NZ. "It's in all of our interests to run quality Cycling events, and we need to be creative whilst our vision is still a work in progress".
Malcolm Saunders concludes, "This year's National Championship attracted the best road riders from around New Zealand. We had a record number of entrants with over 570 cyclists. The timing went so smoothly in this intensely competitive environment that we have started the process to purchase our own WheelTime system."
